TJCA Middle-School Students Collected More Than 5,100 Diapers for Heartbeat Pregnancy Center

Mortellus

Jan 4, 2008

An early school-organized charitable drive directed thousands of donated diapers to a pregnancy center, marking the beginning of a fundraising tradition that would later draw scrutiny over TJCA's support for religious anti-abortion ministries.

What happened: On January 4, 2008, The Daily Courier published a photograph of Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy middle-school students celebrating the collection of more than 5,100 diapers for Heartbeat Pregnancy Center. The brief article, titled Diaper Dandies, documented the students' participation in a school diaper drive benefiting the pregnancy center. The photograph showed participating students standing together behind their collected donations, presenting the project as a successful community-service effort. The drive provided practical supplies intended to assist families caring for young children. It also marked an early stage in what became a recurring TJCA fundraising program associated with religiously affiliated pregnancy-support organizations. What initially appeared in the local newspaper as an ordinary student charity project became part of a longer history of questions about the organizations TJCA selected for school-sponsored charitable activities.

What was established: The January 2008 newspaper report confirms that TJCA middle-school students collected more than 5,100 diapers for an organization identified as Heartbeat Pregnancy Center. The article included a contributed photograph and identified participating students.

Although brief, the report documents three important facts: the participation of TJCA students, the collection of a substantial quantity of supplies, and the designation of a pregnancy center as the beneficiary. The original article does not describe the center's services, religious affiliations, or abortion-related positions. Nor does it explain who selected the beneficiary or how the school organized the collection. However, a subsequent newspaper report provides important context.

On January 4, 2009, The Daily Courier reported that TJCA's middle-school Student Council had sponsored its second annual diaper drive, this time identifying Hands of Hope Ministry as the beneficiary. That report described a December 1–17 collection period, participation by school homerooms, and recognition of the class that collected the most supplies. The 2009 drive produced 11,694 diapers, more than twice the amount documented in January 2008. The sequence establishes that TJCA's diaper drive developed into a recurring, school-organized project involving its Student Council and classroom participation. The change in the reported beneficiary's name—from Heartbeat Pregnancy Center in 2008 to Hands of Hope Ministry in 2009—remains unexplained in the available records.

What was not established: The 2008 newspaper caption does not identify the organizational history or institutional affiliations of Heartbeat Pregnancy Center. It has not yet been established whether that name referred to the same organization subsequently identified as Hands of Hope Ministry, a predecessor organization, or a separate pregnancy-support provider. The available record also does not establish whether students were required to participate, whether contributions were solicited during instructional time, or what information families received about the beneficiary.

Original evidence:

The Daily Courier — Diaper Dandies. January 4, 2008, page 12.

A contemporary newspaper photograph and caption documenting more than 5,100 diapers collected by TJCA middle-school students for Heartbeat Pregnancy Center.

The Daily Courier — TJCA Students Hold Diaper Drive. January 4, 2009, page 3C.

A follow-up report identifying TJCA's second annual diaper drive, the Student Council's organizational role, homeroom participation, and Hands of Hope Ministry as the beneficiary.

Both reports are preserved in TJCA Truth's historical newspaper archive.

Subsequent developments: The diaper drive became a recurring feature of TJCA's student charitable activities. By April 2011, the school's annual collection for Hands of Hope for Life had attracted attention from NC Policy Watch, which examined the relationship between public charter schools and religiously affiliated organizations. The investigation identified Hands of Hope as a Christian anti-abortion ministry and questioned whether a publicly funded school should sponsor charitable activities benefiting an organization with an explicitly religious mission.

The program nevertheless continued.

In January 2014, The Daily Courier reported that TJCA's seventh annual diaper drive had collected 29,169 diapers for Hands of Hope Ministry. These later reports establish the considerable growth and longevity of the school's fundraising tradition. What remains unclear is how the original recipient was selected, whether the beneficiary organization changed, and what role TJCA administrators played in establishing the annual project. TJCA Truth welcomes early Student Council records, school newsletters, donation announcements, correspondence with Heartbeat Pregnancy Center, and documents explaining the relationship between the organizations named in the 2008 and subsequent reports.

Report from the community: The January 2008 newspaper photograph documents direct student participation in the diaper drive. The accompanying caption identifies the project and its beneficiary, but does not include interviews with the participating students, their families, or school personnel. No separate firsthand accounts from individuals involved in organizing the 2008 collection have yet been obtained by TJCA Truth. TJCA Truth welcomes recollections from former students, Student Council members, teachers, parents, and school administrators familiar with the early diaper drives. Accounts describing how the project originated, how beneficiaries were selected, whether participation was voluntary, and how the organizations were presented to students would help preserve the history of this long-running school activity.
